Building Crack & NDT Testing in Ahmedabad | GTSM Testing Labs

A crack is easy to cover.


Its cause is not.


In May 2026, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation reportedly issued notices concerning 274 dangerous and dilapidated buildings along the Rath Yatra route.


That number should not create panic.


It should create one sensible question:


Are we investigating building damage before repairing it?



A crack is a symptom, not a diagnosis


A visible crack does not automatically mean that a building is unsafe.


Cracks may develop due to several reasons, including:


• Concrete shrinkage

• Water leakage

• Thermal movement

• Corrosion of reinforcement

• Settlement

• Overloading

• Poor workmanship

• Structural movement


The problem begins when the crack is filled, painted and forgotten—only to return after the next monsoon.


Paint can improve the appearance of a wall.


It cannot explain why the wall cracked.



What is NDT testing?


Non-Destructive Testing, commonly called NDT, helps engineers collect information about existing concrete without unnecessarily damaging the structure.


Depending on the condition of the building, the investigation may include:



Rebound Hammer Test


A Rebound Hammer Test is used to assess the surface hardness and uniformity of concrete.


It can help identify areas where the concrete condition may differ across the structure.


However, the result should not be treated as a direct strength certificate without proper interpretation and correlation.



Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test


The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, or UPV, test measures how an ultrasonic pulse travels through concrete.


It can help assess concrete quality and identify possible discontinuities, voids or variations within the tested area.



Concrete Core Test


In a concrete core test, a cylindrical sample is carefully extracted from the structure and tested in a laboratory.


Core testing may be recommended where a more direct assessment of in-situ concrete strength is required.



Can one test declare a building safe?


No.


No single test can certify an entire building as safe or unsafe.


Test results must be studied together with:


• Crack patterns

• Corrosion and rust marks

• Water leakage

• Falling concrete

• Structural drawings

• Building age and history

• Visible deformation

• Loading conditions


The final repair, strengthening or redevelopment decision should be taken by a qualified structural engineer.



When should a building be investigated?


A professional assessment should be considered when you notice:


• Cracks that repeatedly return after repair

• Concrete falling from slabs, beams or balconies

• Exposed or rusted reinforcement

• Leakage near structural members

• Sagging slabs or beams

• Unusual vibrations

• Damage after fire, impact or heavy alteration

• Distress in an old residential or commercial building


Waiting does not make the problem smaller.


It only makes the evidence harder to ignore.



Test before repair


Repairing a crack may improve the wall.
