Concrete Cube Test vs Core Test: Which Does Your Project Need?

Concrete may look strong, but appearance alone cannot confirm its compressive strength. Cube testing and core testing answer two different questions about concrete quality.


What does a concrete cube test check?


During concreting, a representative sample is collected, cast into cube moulds, properly compacted and cured. The cubes are then tested under compression.


Cube testing is mainly used for routine concrete quality control during construction.


When is a concrete core test required?


A cylindrical core is extracted from hardened concrete in the actual RCC structure and tested. Core testing helps assess the concrete placed inside a column, beam, slab or other structural element.


Core testing may be considered when:


- Cube test results are doubtful or low.

- Cube samples were not prepared or are unavailable.

- The quality of placed concrete is questioned.

- An existing RCC structure requires assessment.


Before core cutting, reinforcement should be located and the test location should be selected carefully in consultation with the structural engineer.


Cube test or core test?


A cube test checks a sample prepared from fresh concrete. A core test checks concrete extracted from the completed structure. These tests serve different purposes and should not be treated as direct substitutes.
