Before the Next Layer Goes Down, Test the One Below

A road rarely fails on the day the surface gives way.


The real problem may have started much earlier—below the finished layer, where it was no longer visible.


On 18 July 2026, a fresh road cave-in was reported in Thaltej, Ahmedabad. The published news report does not identify inadequate compaction as the cause, so it would be incorrect to connect the incident directly with compaction failure.


But the incident raises an important question for every construction project:


Was the soil properly tested before it was covered?


Looking firm is not the same as being properly compacted.


Field Density Testing measures the dry density achieved at site and allows engineers to compare it with the laboratory-determined maximum dry density. This helps confirm whether the required percentage of compaction has been achieved before the next layer is placed.


The test is commonly required for:


Road subgrades and sub-bases

Foundation and trench backfilling

Plinth filling

Earth embankments

Warehouse and industrial floors

Pipeline and utility work


Depending on the soil and site conditions, field density may be determined using:


IS 2720 (Part 28) — Sand Replacement Method

IS 2720 (Part 29) — Core Cutter Method


The best time to find a compaction problem is before it is buried.


Because once the next layer is placed, correcting the mistake becomes slower, more expensive and far more difficult.


Don’t guess compaction. Verify it.
