How Deep Should Soil Investigation Go?

Many soil-testing enquiries begin with one request:

“Give me a quotation for a 10-metre soil test.”

However, one fixed investigation depth cannot suit every construction project.

A bungalow, warehouse, industrial structure, water tank and multi-storey building transfer different loads to the ground. Soil layers, groundwater conditions and rock depth may also change considerably between sites.

What Determines the Required Borehole Depth?

The number, location and depth of boreholes should be planned after considering:

The proposed structure and its intended use

Building height and expected loading

Plot size and construction layout

Presence of basements, tanks or heavy machinery

Existing fill, weak soil or compressible layers

Groundwater and rock conditions

Foundation-design requirements

The objective is to investigate the soil layers that may influence the structure—not merely to complete a predetermined drilling depth.

Information to Share Before Requesting a Quotation

To plan a relevant soil investigation, provide the site location, plot layout, proposed building use, number of floors and structural details available at that stage.

The final investigation programme should be confirmed according to the project requirements and the advice of the structural or geotechnical engineer.
