Rebound Hammer Testing is one of the most commonly used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods for evaluating concrete structures. It is quick, convenient and useful for understanding the surface hardness and uniformity of concrete.
However, a Rebound Hammer result should not automatically be treated as the final compressive strength of concrete.
Several factors can influence the readings, including:
- Surface condition of concrete
- Moisture condition
- Carbonation
- Type of aggregate
- Age of concrete
- Location and orientation of testing
For existing buildings, doubtful concrete quality or structural assessment, engineers may recommend combining Rebound Hammer Testing with UPV Testing, Concrete Core Testing and visual assessment to obtain a clearer understanding of the concrete condition.
